3 Things To Consider When Investing In Acrylic Printing

Photographers and artists have been using acrylic printing to preserve and display their artwork for many years. This printing method can easily prolong the life of an image while creating a unique display piece.

1. Paper and Ink

The paper and ink that you use to create your image will have a direct impact on the quality of your finished acrylic print.

If your image is in color, then metallic paper can add depth to the colors that are printed. Black and white images work well when printed on a glossy paper background.

The type of ink that you should use will depend on the type of effect you want to achieve with acrylic printing.

Inkjet printing utilizes pigment-based ink and dyes to create colorful images. C-prints are created using some of the same chemicals that you will find in a darkroom. These chemicals can enhance color, shading, and texture.

2. Printing Methodology

Another factor that you will need to consider when creating an acrylic print is the printing methodology that you want to use.

Direct printing occurs when a technician uses a specialized printer to print your image directly onto the acrylic. This printing methodology can be affordable but isn't as durable as face-mounting.

Face-mounting is a more intricate process. The face of your printed image is bonded to the acrylic to create a cohesive and seamless design. Bonding is achieved with the use of compounds that will not damage the paper or ink used in your print.

If you want to invest in acrylic printing that will withstand the test of time, face-mounting will be the methodology of choice.

3. Backing Materials

Once your image has been direct-printed or face-mounted to acrylic, you will need to select a backing material. The backing material you select will help to provide added stability for the printed piece. 

Sintra Board or Dibond tend to be the most popular products when it comes to backing materials for acrylic printing. These materials will lend some rigidity to your piece so that it doesn't bend or fold.

Some people choose to add an aluminum subframe as well. The subframe helps to give your acrylic piece the illusion that it is floating when mounted on a wall.
